The Forgotten Door

Hello there, nice to meet you.

I don't know about you but I find myself constantly on the prowl for new sources of creative inspiration, whether it's architectural plans, illustration, skateboarding videos, fashion, furniture design or some bizarre, niche technological advance.

If things go to plan, the most intriguing and exciting of these discoveries and some incredible, inspiring photography will wash up here, on the shores of Tumblr.

You can find my own photographic endeavours over on my blog which is located at www.wearehomegrown.co.uk

  • Smerins - Walking In The Air

On 7th December 2010, Nemone asked her BBC 6 Music listeners to vote on a Christmas song for Smerins Anti-Social Club to record. In less than a week the band had arranged, recorded and produced a ska-influenced version of Walking In The Air, Howard Blake’s composition made famous by The Snowman animation of 1982.

Massive thanks to John Hendicott who produced the track and also filmed and edited the video. Big up yourself! Big thanks also to Ben Wood for stepping in to record some amazing flute parts.

  • Home

This October sees the return of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, DJ and erstwhile Wah Wah 45s label boss, Adam Scrimshire, with the debut offering to be taken from his second album “The Hollow”.

“Home” is a good place to start for this latest opus, representing as it does a trip back in time to the roots of this young man’s music, with a more contemporary electronic edge. Stunning harmonies come courtesy of our very own Faye Houston from dub reggae favourites Resonators, and bass worrying dance floor interpretations are taken care of by U.S. heavyweight Captain Planet and those young turks from Leeds, Paper Tiger. But if time is needed for reflection, look no further than Scrimshire’s own acoustic ‘re-version’, with the man himself laying his soul bare on vocal duties.

Words and music by the mighty Scrimshire.

  • Scrimshire - Long Time

This track was originally written in 2000. The vocal was re-recorded in 2006 and last week I finally recorded the backing track afresh.

It was on the first demo I handed to Dom at Wah Wah alongside I Was Love, so prior to the next album I feel like I’ve closed that circle.

I re-recorded this last week as I finally felt like I understood how to make it. It used to revolve around a sample but I stripped that and have recorded drums, bass, rhodes and guitars live for it. Oh and tambourine.

I really hope you enjoy and download this. I’ve always loved the track, even if lyrically and musically it feels like an old, old thing.

Thank you for supporting! Please, share this with your friends.

Words and music by the mighty Scrimshire.

  • Marvin Gaye

I recently relocated to Chicago and this track is perfect for the summer rooftop parties in the city. I couldn’t find any valid information on this edit, as it was released as black label vinyl, but its perfectly DJ friendly and one of the greatest songs of all time.

  • Ahu - To:Love

Long tipped as a vocalist to watch, Ahu steps softly from the shadows of her lauded guest appearances to deliver To:Love.

It’s a captivating performance from the Turkish singer whose unique style might be found somewhere between traditional soul and the studied remove of the likes of Broadcast’s Trish Keenan. If there’s poignancy in her delivery, there is hope in the lyrics: it’s a song about the calm and freedom felt by lovers after they split.

Her long-time friend and musical ally Paul White provides the subtle, ever-shifting backdrop, a nuanced electronic counterpoint to the more organic psychedelia of his recent …and the Purple Brain LP.

  • Rough Fields

“Manila” is almost completely constructed from rescued instruments (a violin found on a tip, a rebuilt mandolin, a melodica with 15 working keys, a 2 string guitar) and found sounds (the percussion is mostly chopsticks, the kick drum is a mic in a pretty big cardboard box). It’s kind of a love song. But not really.

Recorded in January 2011 in a flat in Tottenham, “Watery Fable” is a (thoroughly fictional) tale about the last two living members of a made-up tribe, and their ultimate abandonment of their traditional land. It’s a vague parable of letting go, non-entrenchment, fluidity and moving on. The sound sources are found objects, rescued instruments, mechanical toys, weird artefacts of analogue kit and a healthy dose of environmental recordings. The fidgety, lo-fi clicks and claps are beefed up on the B-side by Elias Linn for a bass-heavy percussive remix.

“Watery Fable” is released on digital and deluxe 7” vinyl featuring artwork by photographer Sarah Faraday.

  • Absolutely cannot get enough of this single right now. I do love a bit of steel drums (tastefully done, of course).
